The Economy in Peru

Tourism is the third-biggest industry in Peru, after mining and fishing. Consequently, the sector has given many job positions to Peruvians and has reduced poverty for the past three decades. This data is in addition to the fact that Peru, especially Machu Picchu, is “the ice on the cake” in any South American journey. Therefore, tourism in Peru has grown quickly in the last few years and has become the primary source of income for high Andean and jungle rural communities, other organizations that practice sustainable tourism, and persons who work for them.

Local Employment

Peru nation is a developing country with a large specter of poverty population in comparison with the middle and high classes. That is why we want to give back to Peru by helping to reduce poverty. And we start with ourselves, being a local company, Machu Travel Peru is 100% a Peruvian travel agency with local qualified labor in all its areas. Besides to work with providers who generate and support local employment. This fact assures that local employers can give back to their communities economically, contributing positively to the Peruvian cities’ society.

Support children

Niños del Arco Iris (Rainbow Children) is a foundation located in the Sacred Valley zone of Cusco. There, the volunteers, teachers, and nurses help local children in vulnerable states (extreme poverty, illness, abandonment) to achieve complete development in 4 areas, end of poverty, zero hunger, health and well-being, and quality education. But the children are not the only beneficiaries here, but also their families. Machu Travel Peru has been working with the foundation for some years, not only providing financial funds but also donating goods. Because no one can grow if the one next to them stops doing it.

Do you want to contribute to a sustainable trip causing the least possible impact?

Follow these steps!

  • 1. The single-use plastic like bags and straws is the main agent of contamination anywhere. Please, stay away from its use.
  •
  • 2. Famous Peruvian footpaths like the Inca Trail, or ancient citadels like Machu Picchu receive hundreds of visitors per day. Can you imagine the huge amount of waste that is thrown there? Thus, if you are going to visit any Peruvian attractions, don’t throw garbage and keep them in your backpack and if you see someone, pick them up.
  •
  • 3. If you see charming local kids or native people during your journey in Peruvian lands, please don’t take pictures of them without their consent or their Parent’s consent. They are not animals and demand the same respect as anyone.
  •
  • 4. You are unique, take tours off the beaten path! Hike new paths, visit ancient citadels recently discovered and new attractions with sustainable consciousness. In this form, You will stop being part of the congestion suffered by traditional attractions.
  •
  • 5. Respect the visit period of each attraction. Remember, each Peruvian attraction has its own study of load capacity and will be excellent if the traveler respects the maximum capacity of visits stipulated. We have to preserve these attractions for future generations.
