SANTISIMO DOWNHILL 2024 IN CUSCO, A SPECIAL OCCASION THAT GATHERED THE BEST BIKERS IN THE WORLD

Santisimo Downhill 2024

One of Peru’s most emblematic downhill mountain bike races, the Santisimo Downhill Challenge, returned to Cusco after seven years. Of course, the event in the Imperial City was unique, as the competition celebrated its 10th edition there.

The 2.4-kilometer circuit started at Salvidachayoc Hill’s viewpoint in the San Isidro Chicón community district in the province of Urubamba, Cusco, at 3548 m.a.s.l. The finish point was the stadium of the same community, over the intersection of the local road with Av Mariscal Castilla, in the Center of Urubamba, at 3127 m.a.s.l.

The race route in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a unique blend of natural and artificial obstacles, spanned approximately 2.4 kilometers. With its challenging course featuring around 421 meters of unevenness, it was a true test of skill and endurance. The proximity to the snow-capped Chicón added an element of unpredictability, with the threat of rain looming over the competition days of April 20 and 21. However, the route’s sandy, stony, non-clay gravel soil was designed naturally to handle such conditions, ensuring a smooth and exciting race.

The Santisimo Downhill Challenge is not just a local event; it’s a beacon of extreme downhill bike sports in Latin America. The quality of national and international participants is a testament to its prestige and recognition. More than 100 bikers participated in this famous challenge, including locals Brener Montes, Mateo Negri, and Lucio Vellutino.

They ensured that the house was respected in the face of true glories of the world downhill, such as the Ecuadorians Andrés Sotomayor and Iker Sotomayor, who have several international titles, or the current World Champion, Mario Jarrin. Without mentioning the Argentine Gonzalo Gajdosech, who is currently considered one of the best in South America.

As if that were not enough, the Italian rider Eleonora Farina participated in this race, who is in the world ranking and has 4 medals in the European Mountain Bike Championship. In addition, the Santísimo had to New Zealander Tuhoto Ariki, ranked worldwide and recognized in 2023 as “King of Crankworx Whistler”

The competition was a full-blown party where competition and fraternity always reigned. And where organizers, collaborators, and participants were winners. The organizer’s objective, Diego Seminario, together with strategic collaborators such as Machu Travel Peru, is clear: Position this circuit as one of the dates of the downhill world championship shortly, and it seems that they are achieving it!

national downhill championship

As part of our mission to help develop Down Hill sporting activity, Machu Travel Peru supported the National Down Hill Championships 2018 that finished in the Community of Llicllec, Calca, in the Sacred Valley, Cusco. Therefore, we supported and helped all the participants get to their highest levels of performance and to complete their highest abilities.

Thanks to their push, their strength of will, and courage. In this form, these young people work hard to reach their objectives.

Machu Travel Peru was glad to be part of this competition supporting these athletes.  We believe that this is the best way to encourage and help new national athletes and, on the other hand, promote interest from the public in these events.

donation of musical instruments

Machu Travel Peru helps those local institutions that we feel are willing to offer good education to their students. The object of these actions is to provide tools for developing the potential of the students and to permit the best quality education. For this reason, Machu Travel Peru helps these schools and recently made a donation of musical instruments to the Uriel Garcia School in Cusco City.

This is how, in a small way, we help improve the quality of education in arts and science for the students in Cusco.

niños del arco iris foundation

We will never forget where we come from, where our roots are and the land which we grew up in. That is why we are committed to Andean children and local teenager’s education and health care.

Through this amazing social project Niños del Arco Iris Foundation, we have found an opportunity to collaborate with hundreds of children, teenagers and their families who live in poverty, having a better present and a promising future. With the money we receive from the tourists having lunch or staying the weekend, we will give the chance to these children and teenagers to move forward from chronic malnutrition and have a nutritive lunch every day as well as health care and elementary school education.

We won’t be able to have a better world if we do not provide our children a chance to have one… Let’s give them the chance… because every child has the right to be loved, be educated, be respected… to BE.

COMMUNITY OF SALKANTAY
LOCATION: CUSCO - SANTA TERESA DISTRICT - LA CONVENCION PROVINCE

A rural community close to Cusco, that suffers from poverty the same as any community in the Highlands, that has no electricity or drinking water, with a small shop and public school that has only one teacher who must educate more than 50 children from different levels.

Towns such as these need our support. And Machu Travel Peru brought a little joy, hot chocolate and panettone to these children for Christmas 2014.
