About Bolivia
Bolivia is the eighty-third largest country with an extension of 424,160 square miles and around 13 million inhabitants. It is located in the central east of South America and it borders south with Argentina, southeast with Paraguay, east and north with Brazil, and west with Chile and Peru. Although it has an extension, the Andean country speaks three different languages: Spanish, Aymara, and Quechua.
Its indigenous population is 50% of the total. This means that Bolivia has the highest percentage of the native population that has received the least influence from foreign races (European, Asian, African). For this reason, visiting Bolivia is a trip to the past and enjoying its colonial architecture and streets, besides the architectural vestiges of great pre-Columbian cultures like Tiwanaku and the Aymaras, and with its native population. Without mentioning its great nature parks and reserves. Therefore, Bolivia has to be your unmissable point in your South American trip.
Getting there
Unless you’re traveling overland from a neighboring country like Peru, Chile, Brazil, or Argentina, you’ll likely need to fly into Bolivia. The main international airports are El Alto International Airport in La Paz and Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz. Flights into Bolivia are available from major South American hubs such as Lima, Bogotá, and São Paulo, as well as from Miami and Madrid. Fares vary depending on the season and airline, but most tickets can be purchased online without hassle. El Alto sits at over 4,000 meters, so travelers should be prepared for the altitude upon arrival. From either airport, taxi rides to the city centers take between 30 to 50 minutes.
Getting around
Best things to do in Bolivia
- Exploring Bolivia means immersing yourself in a cultural and natural wealth unique to the continent. Immerse yourself in its rich culture, for example, the Aymara, one of the cultures in South America. The ancient people who lived in Lake Titicaca developed sophisticated techniques. However, it includes the 36 ethnic groups that inhabit the country and is an example of the wide cultural richness.
- Explore the incredible biodiversity, which includes Andean camelids, jaguars, anteaters, pumas, and tapirs are just some of the species that can be observed in protected natural environments. Several vantage points allow for the sighting of wildlife, both native and emblematic of the country.
- To complement any trip, enjoying the panoramic views of Bolivia is essential. Its contrasting ecosystems—plains, lakes, rivers, snow-capped mountains, jungles, and colonial cities—offer a unique visual experience. The Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, stands out, becoming a natural mirror during the rainy season, ideal for unforgettable photographs.
- Bolivian cuisine is a delight for the senses. Its diversity reflects the blend of cultures and regions. Traditional dishes such as Sajta de Cordero, Salteñas Paceñas, Humintas, and the Sándwich de La Chola offer a taste of the distinctive flavors of the Altiplano and beyond. Local ingredients and traditional techniques combine with international influences, resulting in a cuisine as rich as its culture.
- Iconic cities like La Paz and Sucre invite you to lose yourself among their colonial streets, European-style plazas, and majestic churches. These historic centers allow visitors to connect with Bolivian history, art, and architecture in settings that seem frozen in time.
Experiences
Like its neighbors, Bolivia offers a wide variety of outdoor activities thanks to its geographic and climatic diversity. From the Andean heights to the Amazonian plains, each destination offers unique opportunities for adventure, nature observation, and cultural connection.

The best time to visit Bolivia
The Bolivian territory is divided into two well-differentiated zones. The mountain range and the Andean plateau are located on the west, very close to Peru’s frontier, (La Paz, Lake Titicaca, Potosi, and Uyuni) and the Amazon area is located on the east zone, very close to Brazil, with lowlands composed of savannahs, tropical forests, and flooded forests (Sucre, Santa Cruz de la Sierra). In this form, the climate varies according to the region and latitude of the zone. But in general terms, Bolivia is warm and humid in summer and cold in winter.
It is also worth noting that two different seasons affect all areas of the country to a greater or lesser degree. These are the dry season from November to March and the Rainy Season, from April to October. In general, the dry season is the best time to visit Bolivia, it is due to the absence of rain, blue and clear skies, and fresh and cold breezes. However, visiting Uyuni in the Rainy season is highly recommended because the rains form a giant water mirror on the entire esplanade of the salt flat. Of course, it will be colder and the access will be more difficult, but it will be worth it.
