About Ecuador
With approximately 17 million inhabitants, Ecuador is located in the northwestern zone of South America, and it is the ninth-largest country in South America with 283.561 square kilometers. It borders Colombia to the north, Peru to the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Of course, the most important data is its name, the country receives its name due to the Equatorial line that crosses it just in the middle of its territory.
Its population is divided into 71,9% of mestizos, 7,4% of native countrymen, 7,2% of Afro-Ecuadorians, 7% of indigenous, and only 6% of white people. In this form, Ecuador is a pluricultural country with many colors, flavors, and activities to offer, besides traditional villages, old colonial towns, and occasional ruins scattered across the landscape. Quito is the Ecuadorian capital with more than 2,850 m.a.s.l. Nestled in the middle of the Ecuadorian mountain range. There you will see beautiful colonial neighborhoods combined with charming nature and a rich history, not to mention the kindness of its people. For all these reasons, Ecuador is a must-see country on your South American itinerary.
Getting there
Unless you’re entering by land from Colombia or Peru, flying is the most common way to reach Ecuador. The primary international gateway is Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito, with additional international connections available through José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport in Guayaquil. Major airlines operate regular flights from the U.S., Europe, and other South American countries. Quito’s airport is located about 45 minutes from the city center; taxis or airport shuttles are available and widely used. If your destination is the Galápagos Islands, you’ll first need to fly into Quito or Guayaquil before connecting to one of the islands via a domestic flight.
Getting around
Ecuador is compact compared to its neighbors, making it relatively easy to explore. Domestic flights can connect major cities and the Galápagos, but for most destinations, buses are the preferred and affordable option. The bus network is extensive and efficient, connecting even the smallest towns. In urban areas, travelers can rely on taxis and ride-hailing apps, and in cities like Quito, an expanding metro and trolleybus system. For a more scenic journey, certain train routes, though limited, offer unique cultural experiences through the Andes.
Best things to do in Ecuador
- From the vast Amazon to the iconic Galápagos Islands, Ecuador has earned its place as one of the most popular destinations for observing biodiversity. Its abundant endemic wildlife and unique natural settings make the country a true paradise for biologists, eco-tourists, and nature lovers.
- Ecuadorian cuisine reflects the richness of its four natural regions. Vibrant colors, intense flavors, and a deep cultural tradition merge in dishes like llapingacho, ceviche, and mote pillo. Each bite is a sensorial experience that tells stories of people, native ingredients, and inherited techniques.
- Immerse yourself in the cultural diversity of Ecuador, a country with a historical legacy marked by ancient civilizations, colonization, and modernity. This fusion has given rise to an identity rich in customs, music, dances, festivities, and popular expressions. Participating in its celebrations is a direct window into its soul.
- Wandering through the historic centers of cities like Quito, Cuenca, or Guayaquil is like stepping back in time. Cobblestone streets, colonial plazas, white-domed churches, and period mansions bring to life settings that reflect centuries of history and tradition.
- Admiring the wildlife and natural beauty is an essential experience. Beyond its endemic species, Ecuador stands out for its diverse landscapes: tropical rainforests, Andean moors, golden beaches, and towering volcanoes. Each region offers a unique perspective for connecting with nature.

The best time to visit Ecuador
Undoubtedly, the best time to visit Ecuador is between June and November, or in other words, during the dry season. Clear skies, fresh breezes, and sunlight will accompany fantastic experiences like kayak, diving, snorkeling, and even hiking, through the Amazon rainforest or the Mountain range. The Galápagos Islands deserve special mention, whose surrounding and deep waters become more crystalline due to the warming climate of the area; therefore, practicing diving and swimming in their waters is perfect. In addition, this season allows visitors to go hiking through the Ecuadorian Amazon, climb mountains in the Andes, or navigate through the famous Galápagos Islands without annoying rains or cloudy skies. Furthermore, the season coincides with the high tourist influx, which is why the days and nights in Ecuador become more cosmopolitan and vibrant.
